Bald Eagle

Date: 01/01/2011

Number: 1

Lone bald eagle spotted soaring over the frozen St. Croix River Valley over the Stillwater Lift Bridge mid morning New Years Day. Larger birds including ravens starting to return following heaviest December snowfalls on record here. Last week's unseasonal rain reduced thickness of insulating snowcover by about 7 inches & permitted first vehicular ice traffic, much to happiness of anglers who had been shore-bound by slush caused by heavy snow pushing down on thin ice, a frustrating phenomenon occasionally occuring here in years of early deep snow. We are seeing eagles regularly 12 months/yr and are saving small frozen panfish to see them through lean times still ahead.
