Bald Eagle

Date: 01/08/2011

Number: 1

At 10:30am, I was driving in my car when I noticed a very large bird perched in a tall Tulip Poplar tree close to the intersection of Lassiter Rd and Peace Haven Rd. This is a residential area, but the area is also adjacent to a creek (4-6 feet across). I pulled my car over to the side of the road and was able to get a clear view of the heavy bodied, large bird -- it had a pure white head, hooked yellow beak, dark brown body and a white tail. I was able to identify it as a Bald Eagle immediately. I am an amateur birder but have observed Bald Eagles in the wild while visiting Wyoming. I took a video (approx 30 sec) of the eagle using my iphone camera. On the video, the bird leaves it perch and flies to another tree -- its tremendous wingspan and its unmistakeable white head and tail are clearly visible. I was amazed by this sighting and I feel so fortunate to have had this experience. I will be saving the video as confirmation of this sighting.
