Today we have had 2 hatchings in our milkweed patch. The outside temperature is in the mid 60s. We have seen no flybys, though I saw 1 monarch fly by in town about 2 miles from here on 01/08/2011. We have about 50 caterpillars on the milkweed of various sizes. Those forming pupa are smaller than those during the summer by about 15%. Many caterpillars are dying before pupating. We have had unusually cold weather here.
