Practice Report (Any Species)

Date: 01/20/2011

Number: 1

My husband, kids, and I have been observing four female Painted Buntings at our feeders for approximately 1 1/2 months now.

Being an amateur, I thought they were a type of warbler, but was happy to discover a photophers site with pics of these birds. He identified them and I was ecstatic! I know it sounds a little "over the top", but I was going crazy lookin at warblers til I was "blue in the face". I thanked the young photographer on his site, of course.

The four Buntings have been enjoying my insect block, and "Stokes Select" bird food (". . . preferred by Goldfinches, Juncos, and Buntings"). Well, they do seem to love it and are always squabbling over it. They also love my recycling bird bath and are a joy to watch when splashing around in it!

We had the male that passes through every year come by during Christmas, but he never stays and I have not seen him since (unless his molting look is now a disguise?").

I have not been able to get a picture of them, but am determined to keep trying.

Keep on birding, America!
