Robin (First SEEN)

Date: 01/31/2011

Number: 1

We visited a beaver pond a half kilometre down the road from our house in this small secluded seaside community and were surprised to see 2 very fat and bright red Robins. They were flitting between the trees and the ground. Not much snowcover. They flew away soundlessly as we approached. Perhaps they overwintered but they have not been seen or heard on our property where we have well stocked feeders still attracting Chickadees, Bluejays, Mourning Doves, Crows and occasionally Gold Finches and Pheasants. Downy and Black Backed Three-Toed Woodpeckers have been seen in our trees. It's been relatively mild and up until mid-January a Great Blue Heron was still visiting the shoreline in front of our house at dusk. We've seen Otters and a lone Seal eating fish on the thin ice. A couple times in light fresh snow we have found Bobcat tracks skirting our feeders and along the shoreline. Not bad for our first winter living outside the city.
