Oriole (1st Baltimore)

Date: 02/05/2011

Number: 1

We were using binoculars to watch a gigantic flock of robins that decended on our farm when my grandaughter first spotted the odd bright orange and black bird flying with them. Not quiet believing it, I looked also and it flew right into view. It was clearly part of the flock and clearly not a parrot (which we always think of first with those bright colors). My grandaughter drew the bird accurately using color and it looked exacatly like the Baltimore oriole I found on the internet. The flock stayed at my farm for the day, covering every tree as far as I could see. I have 20 acres so that's lots of trees. I can't believe we saw this bird with so many of them out there but there he was, flying in and out of a palm tree with a group of robins who appeared to be his buddies. He was the only one colored like that. I wonder how he came to be flying with the robins like that?
