Edgecombe County Cooperative Extension (Horticulture & 4-H Agents) teamed up with Edgecombe Master Gardener Volunteers to work with Ms. Lassiter's 1st grade class at Stock's Elementary. Five Master Gardeners and agents worked with 21 students to develop a flower bed, amend the soil and plant 2 tulips per student. This was the first opportunity for some students to plant in the soil. Working in composted cow manure was a highlight of the activity as many of the students had helped to spread it by hand before realizing what it was. We will follow up with the students once the tulip have emerged with three additional hands-on classes.
