Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 02/01/2011

Number: 1

In January we saw as many as four monarchs flying in the backyard at the same time and found seven 5th instars plus other smaller on the curassavica. Feb 1st, we saw monarchs flying around and nectaring on the backyard curassavica ... larvae to 4th instars. After a hard freeze, we have no blooms left, nothing green left, but at in the eastern part of the county, about six miles from the Gulf barrier islands, two monarchs were reported flying around ... so some have survived for awhile. Another cold front has come in and it is 32 dF at 3:30 in the afternoon, 26 in the morning ... prediction of near 70 next week ... we are hoping this is the end of the COLD stuff down here on the Texas midcoast. We had a good overwintering population until this past week's killing freeze!!! (Written 2/9/11)
