All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 03/02/2011

Number: 1

The frost and snow are gone and the blue violets, golden crocuses, and white snow drops are still blooming. The first of the daffodil buds are beginning to show color. The winter viburnum and pink camellias lost their flowers in last week's deep freeze, but new buds are beginning to open. The song sparrows are singing their spring songs and the resident flicker keeps startling me by drumming on the metal chimney flanges. In winter, the robins move out and varied thrushes move into the garden. Though the thrushes are still here, I did see a robin this morning, checking on a spot where raccoons and skunks had dug up earthworms. Right now, southeast storm is blowing (with gusts up to 49mph, but that does not appear to faze the birds, though most of them are hanging out on the leeward side of the house.
