Students at Elkhorn Area Middle School, under the guidance of their 7th grade science teachers and USFWS, planted roughly 8 acres of prairie. Two years prior to this a dyke was added to the southern wetland to raise water levels and reduce encroaching cattails. Also at that time, we restored the western wetland area. Most notably, falling a tree to provide a stoop for aquatic animals, and ducks. Blue bird houses and wood duck houses were made and placed on the 50 acre site. The main issue we have/had was ridding our property of reed canary grass. With fingers crossed we hope to reverse progress and make our school grounds a model of progress restoring lost habitat. All are welcome to explore our site!
