Red-winged Blackbird (FIRST sighted)

Date: 02/12/2011

Number: 1

About a dozen redwing blackbirds first arrived in our back yard this year on Feb 12th (last year it was Feb 10th) ground feeding on black oil sunflower seed. The group has been growing ever since. The other day we counted about 140 of them, feeding and singing all together in the trees. Boy are they loud!
They tend to sit on different branches in the trees above where the food is and drop straight down to the ground one at a time until the ground is totally covered with them. But it doesn't take much to send them into flight again and all at the same time. Sometimes when the angle of their flight is just right, all you see is the red on their wings. It's quite a sight.
