Hummingbird, Rufous (FIRST)

Date: 03/06/2011

Number: 1

Looking back at my notes I realized that in the last two years the first Rufous Hummingbirds, single males, arrived in my garden starting on March 5. And nearly "on time," the first selasphorous hummers showed up this morning 3/6. But to my surprise, both individuals are females, which makes me wonder whether they might not be Allen's pushed beyond the coastal fog belt by the lousy weather. Typically, male Rufous pass through considerably before the females in their rush to establish territories north of us.
