Tulips EMERGED

Date: 02/10/2011

February 10
Today it was 52 degrees F when we checked the tulip garden. (The high was to be only 51degress F!) The ground temperature was 51 degrees on each side and 49 degrees in the middle. 91 out of our 100 have emerged. The tallest was 10 cm long and the smallest was just barely coming out of the ground. Last year’s tulips already have buds but our new bulbs have not. The new tulip plants are still shorter than last year’s. One tulip had been knocked over by an animal we think it might be a deer, but we could be wrong. One interesting thing we noticed is that several of the new tulip bulbs have had 2 tulip plants emerge!

February 17
Our tulips have started to emerge!!! We found 7 out of our 100 bulbs have begun to emerge. The tallest was 4.5 cm tall and the shortest was just barely poking through the ground. We found it odd that last year’s bulbs (which were left in the ground) have also emerged and are taller than this year’s bulbs. More of the older bulbs have emerged too. We think this happened because they have had more time to grow.

February 24
Nine more of our tulips emerged, that makes 17 in all. (Last week we miscounted – we really had 8 tulips emerge.) The tallest tulip is 6 cm tall and the shortest has just emerged, barely sticking up out of the ground. Today’s high temperature is going to be 66 F. It was 56 F when we checked our tulips. No tulips have emerged in the middle of our garden. We think that happened because an evergreen tree shades the middle of our garden most of the day. We noticed that the same thing is happening where we planted last year’s tulips. They are right beside this year’s tulips. We think the ground is cooler because of the shade. We’re excited to see if any more tulips will emerge next week!

March 3
Today was 54 degrees F and the high should be 62 degrees F with the low being 41 degrees F. This week we found that 60 out of our 100 tulips have emerged. 43 of the tulips emerged this week. The tallest one was 8 cm and the smallest one was under a cm (barely coming out of the ground). The ground tempiture was 50 degrees F on each side of the garden and 40 degrees F in the middle. There are not very many tulips emerging in the middle of our garden. We think that a tree is blocking the sun light. We found that some animal has chewed on our sticks that tell us the height of our own tulip and knocked them over. The sticks are mostly green or yellow. We think the animal might think the sticks are something to eat! We are waiting for the rest of our tulips to emerge and we looking forward to some to bloom! We are also waiting for some more tulips to emerge in the middle of our garden. We hope all 100 will emerge!
