Robin (First HEARD singing)

Date: 03/18/2011

Number: 1

There was a unseasonable warm wind last night and I noticed the snow cover was receding at an accelerated rate. Fields that once had total snow coverage where finally showing large bare spots around Dolgeville north of the Mohawk Valley near Little Falls, NY. In general I have seen whole fields reemerge from winters grip between Little Falls and Ilion. At 6:00 am yesterday, I listened carefully out my window. I heard robins make intense peek sounds. Then I heard a few cheery cheery cherrio songs. They have started and I will go out this Saturday morning and try to take photos of them. A couple of people have posted photos of scores of robins hanging around in the dead of winter, like in Whitesboro, on my local news website WKTV. Soon after my local newspaper the (Utica Observer Dispatch) published an article about this on Febuary 5th. It was titled "The Robins of Winter". In it I read that robins are possibly benefiting from abandonded farm land during the winter, where berry bushes are growing.
