Robin (First SEEN)

Date: 03/17/2011

Number: 1

I have a bit of a dilemma. This winter we had a small flock of overwintering robins. I had a reported sighting of a robin on March 17, and the observer said it was a spring robin. But I am not sure. I had always assumed the spring migrants showed up in bright plumage and that is how you could tell the difference. Now I am wondering whether the observer saw a spring migrant or an overwintering bird. The observer is an elder who has lived in the same place for decades and says that he usually sees his first spring migrants in early March. He lives right on the southern end of the flyway. There are not large numbers of robins yet, nor is there any singing.

See when this Northern Observation Post predicted first robin!
