Monarch Egg (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/19/2011

Number: 1

Checked 3 plants oenotheroides on the Cunningham Ranch in south Quemado Valley, TX. 1 plant (10 rametes) 10 eggs (2 leaves with 3 ea.). 2nd plant (8 rametes) 15 eggs. 3rd plant (3 small sprouts) 3 eggs. Far too little biomass to feed 28 larvae to adulthood. Extreme drought conditions actually favor the monarch. Mortality rates in moist years are 99%, due to large numbers of fireants. But extreme drought reduces predator populations.
