Tulips BLOOMED

Date: 03/21/2011

Number: 1

All of our students have just returned from Spring Break and found a wonderful surprise! While we were gone, our tulips bloomed. There has been so many comments from teachers and other students about how beautiful they look on the hill in our courtyard.

The data collected today is:

The soil temperature today was 56 degrees F. The air temperature was 58 degrees F. This is the closest the air and soil temperatures have been since we planted the bulbs.

The average plant height was 34 centimeters tall measured from the soil to the top of the flower petals.

All the tulips bloomed except 1 which is half exposed above the ground and half under the ground. It is laying on its side and has leaves and the beginning of a stem pointing towards the sky. So 99% of our bulbs have bloomed.

4 plants had double blooms, each on its own stem, coming off 1 bulb.

2 plants had "variegated" or yellow stripes on the red petals.

The forecast later this week is in the 80's and it may rain. When the tulip flowers are spent, students plan to pull them up and dissect the flower. We're all looking forward to seeing the different parts of the flower.
