Upper Lake St. Croix on the Minnesota shore opened up this week enough that a fisherman and his dog in a 16ft boat were able to
navigate the shore a couple hundred yards. They could have trolled for walleyes had the season been open--coming in May.
The lake, which is actually a pool of the Mississippi, is up about 10ft above average but still not in serious flood stage today due to recent cold weather. Silver Creek, an intermittent
steam with a large waterfall, was flowing, helping create the open water, along with the river rise.
