Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/22/2011

Number: 1

The following 7 sightings were made from March 14 - March 22 in Florida and Alabama while the observer, Ilse Gebhard, was on vacation. Because the observer was traveling, these sightings do not really fit the category "first sightings of spring." Therefore, we are listing them here together so they can be interpreted accordingly.

March 14: Rock Bluff, Florida

One monarch sighted in the afternoon at Torreya State Park, near tiny town of Rock Bluff, Florida (30.568889, -84.948056).

March 15, 16 and 17: Ebro, Florida

One monarch sighted each day (same one?) at Pine Log Forest campground, 1 mile south of Ebro, Florida and 1/2 mile west of highway 79 (30.443056, -85.880833).

March 16: Ebro, Florida

One monarch sighted on 2 mile hiking trail around Pine Log Forest campground, (probably not same one as at campground but butterflies have wings)(30.443056, -85.880833).

March 16: West Bay, Florida

One monarch sighted the afternoon of March 16th while driving to Panama City Beach for internet access at library, on highway 79 probably closer to West Bay (30.30, -85.880833) than Ebro, Florida.

March 21: Red Bay, Florida

One monarch sighted at Tilley's Landing campground (2 primitive sites), Lost Lakes Recreation Area, PM, east highway 81 but west of Choctawhatchee River, near tiny town of Red Bay (30.625833, -85.99). Not the place I'd expect a monarch as it is a hummock in a cypress swamp in the floodplain of the Choctawhatchee River.

March 22: Caryville, Florida

One monarch sighted the morning of March 22 while driving on I-10 near Caryville, Florida (30.775556, -85.810556).

March 22: Clanton, Alabama

One monarch sighted the afternoon of March 22

March 22: Huntsville , Alabama
