Red-winged Blackbird (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/23/2011

Number: 1

I've been seeing groups of redwing blackbirds for the past two weeks. They were roosting in the neighbor's large tree when it was bare. I have not seen them since the leaves started to grow last weekend. The birds sit on my fnce rail, along with sparrows and doves, and eat the seeds I sprinkle on the rail, about 16 feet in length, and in a feeder. The sparrows and doves are used to my presence on the patio so are not hesitant to feed while I watch. The redwings, however, used to fly away when I went outside to the patio. They have been less fearful lately as they got accustomed to my presence. They still fly away when I step outside, but then return and feed while I sit and watch.
