I have a huge milkweed garden that regularly has hundreds of cocoons that hatch normally October- January here in San Diego (at the coast). My monarchs begin showing up in the garden usually pretty close to when the Oriole bird population has almost finished leaving the area for the overwintering in the tropics (orioles can eat monarchs although I have never seen it in all my observation hours), usually showing up in August. By late sepepmber I have sometimes hundreds of catepillars. Last year I had two seperate waves of hatchings- the first in Sept- Oct, the second Jan -Feb. which has never happened before. We have monarchs year round here, although it is rare to see them in the spring.
