The first counts of the New Year were conducted from 31 Dec - 8 Jan. Conditions were cold and clear in the early morning and warmed up quickly. Most of the sites showed a decrease in the number of monarchs counted. Despite the decrease, the clusters continue to be very dense and are in fewer trees than earlier in the season. The decrease is not due to monarchs dying, since only a few dead monarchs were found at some of the sites.
