Habitat

Date: 04/08/2011

Number: 1

In late Novemeber 2010, I brought a monarch crysalis to work to share with my co-workers in the emergency room at East Jefferson General Hospital in Metairie, LA. To date, we have watched the emergence and release of 12 monarchs. Since then, I have "forced" catepillars to pupate on a small, potted heather plant that I keep on my desk. Thus, many have been able to see the catepillars become crysalises. At least six of my friends have bought milkweed to start a habitat in their yards. It has been a nice distraction from some of the tough situations that occur in an ED. Patients and visitors find the "habitat" to be a delightful surprise.
