Loon (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/08/2011

Number: 1

Pair of migrating common loons spotted Friday afternoon just north of Stillwater MN lift bridge on St. Croix river, which is closed due to advanciing flood waters. They were subsequently heard calling both mornings, today through a blanket of about 30 ft of fog about a half hour after sunrise. Loon calls were heard here about a week ago but this is our first actual spotting. They were diving near the sandbags on MN shore and later moved to mid channel when the crowd of loon watchers grew.
Generally, the inland lakes are still ice bound, quite a difference from 2010, when ALL the lakes in MN were ice-free by this time and the season seemed to be about a month early. A nature show on Twin Cities radio this morning mentioned a sighting this week of a flock of loons on a western MN lake.
