One of my 4th grade students was in his grandmother's yard in Bloomington, Indiana, when he's pretty sure he noticed a monarch flying north. The butterfly was about 3-4 feet above his head. It seemed to have a gliding pattern of flutter, flutter, glide, flutter, flutter, glide. This student has been studying monarchs all year and is fairly familiar with the species.
