Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/17/2011

Number: 1

It is clear that a pulse of monarchs came through our area last weekend with many sightings last Sunday (10 April) and eggs found in gardens and on milkweed in a burnt over area as I reported earlier.

Judging from what I found in one location, substantial amounts of egg laying occurred on M-W. On Th morning I checked another milkweed patch and found an average of nearly one egg per shoot (N=46). I checked the same site again this morning and there were only 5 additional eggs. Egg laying should have been possible on Th from late morning onward and late yesterday afternoon (but not Friday). So, I'm wondering if that will be all the egg laying until we see first gen monarchs coming north in May.

The 2011 scenario is quite similar to 06 when there was a similar, but slightly later, pulse of monarchs that moved through in April.
