Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/15/2011

Number: 1

We have been keeping an eye on a monarch chrysalis on our school fence, which is located immediately behind our Monarch Waystation. The children actually observed the caterpillar in a J shape April 4th at 8am. By 11:30, the children checked again and the caterpillar had formed it's chrysalis. At 8am April 15th, my daughter, a classmate and I checked on the chrysalis, as we had been doing for a few days. The monarch had eclosed and was hanging on the clear chrysalis. The wings were already unfurled and drying. My daughter then saw another monarch about 20ft from the garden, hanging from a low branch. The wings were still crumpled. The children and teachers actually came running from the classrooms to view the incredibly beautiful butterflies. This all happened on the day we were to present the children with the Monarch Waystation certificate for all their hard work to help the monarchs. A great day!
