Bald Eagle

I have been studying the Bald Eagles at Blackwater Natl Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge MD for 30 years. I am studying 12 nests. They have grown in population tremendously. Due to over population they are pushing north up the Chesapeake Bay. My concern is lack of proper trees for nesting as they go north. I have raised this concern and suggested a program be started to plant "Loblolly Pines" up the east coast rivers and bay area - Bald Eagles love to nest in the Loblolly Pine. It is a fast growing tree and can tolerate very wet soil. However I cannot find to find any eagle experts that recognize the urgency for this - but I just saw Peter Nye's discussion on the topic of lack of proper nesting trees for Balds and am encouraged that someone recognizes the urgency of this. Would your team look into this. The Maryland DNR dept told me they can hook such a project up with a Nursery that would sell Loblolly Pines for about 25 cents each. It would be wonderful to see someone with a webpage start a program called "Foster a Bald Eagle Nest" or something on that order. I would be interested in teaming up with interested folks on this type project. School children would love helping eagles. A program like this could reach out to the communities along the bay and up the rivers. Thanks, les.baker@ngc.com 410-991-5289
