Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/16/2011

Number: 1

My husband and I were vacationing in Daytona, Florida April 16-23, 2011. As we sat near the beach we watched a steady line of monarchs heading north each day. The monarchs would fly in pairs, alone, and sometimes three would be together. I tried to get photos but they were too fast for my camera.

My husband and I both thought we were watching monarchs, but they were smaller than the ones we typically see in Michigan. We both wish we had caught one in order to be sure. We are positive that whatever butterfly they were, they were migrating to the north. They were not flying around looking for nectar, they were on a mission. I have worked with Monarchs in my classroom, but I can't say positively they weren't a look alike.
