Saw my first monarch of the season, a tattered ovipositing female, at Ft. Smith, Arlington, VA, this afternoon. Spent some time watching her selection process, among several 6-inch newcomer stalks. She seemed to reject some pretty healthy ones and concentrated on a few others—not sure why. An hour later still was flying leisurely around a good-sized field.
