Submitted by Don Davis:

Continued southerly flow of warm air on the jet stream into southern Ontario continues to bring large numbers and flocks of migrant birds into the province. In Ottawa, the Nations capital, the following report:

Rain & thunderstorms yesterday, followed by a very mild day today ( drizzle in AM, to sunny & up to 23 degrees C. in PM) prompted lots of bird activity in some of our local birding patches. Combined observations from myself & multiple observers indicated a significant movement of migrants, and the birds were busy well into the afternoon.

Among today's highlights were:

LOTS of passerines in many locations, incl. multiple GOLDEN-CROWNED & RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 8 spp. of WARBLERS (N. PARULA, YELLOW, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, YELLOW-RUMPED+++++, BLACK-THROATED GREEN, PINE+++, PALM+++, OVENBIRD). SPARROWS up the wazoo with WHITE-THROATED and DARK-EYED JUNCO in the majority, also several AM. TREE and FOX SPARROWS. Flocks of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and COMMON REDPOLLS still around, up to a dozen PURPLE FINCHES at (one!) feeder today, as well as a PINE SISKIN at the same.

5 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2 female WILSON'S PHALAROPES (1st local report of the year) at the Embrun sewage lagoons. Also 13 spp. of ducks at this location (Rte. 400 between Cty R. 5 and St. Jacques Rd. immediately south of Embrun, ON).

No doubt there are a lot more birds out there......and given the forecast for continuing mild temp's, more rain & storms tonight, there should be even more to come!

Thanks to everyone for sharing their observations,
