Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 04/10/2011

Number: 1

Late in the afternoon, on my Milford Township (Oakland County, Michigan) property, I had my first and earliest ever hummingbird. It was flying back and forth in long swaths at about 4' above the ground. This was around 5:30 PM. I rushed to get out a feeder but the only area where I had a place ready for a feeder was in the front yard. I was working way in the back so I don't know if it found the feeder. As I continued painting a fence, I noticed a hatching of small black gnats and I suspect it was feeding on those. I was out there from 11:30 AM and I did not see any gnats or insects until after seeing the hummingbird. I think that the bird I saw was a female but the angle of the light wasn't good so I'm not positive.
