Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 03/29/2011

Number: 1

This last week the number of our monarch sightings has increased each day. We are mostly seeing egg-laying females with faded wings (2-3 each day). Today at 4pm it is overcast, 78 degrees F, with no breeze, and I can see 3 monarchs flying in the pasture. Also one of our chinaberry trees is blooming, with a wonderful scent emanating from the blossoms. There are at least 7 monarchs nectaring on the blossoms. I read a Wikipedia article which said that butterflies do not like the nectar of the chinaberry tree (citation needed), so I cannot account for my observations over many years of monarchs and swallowtail butterflies loving the nectar of these blossoms. It is a wonderful sight!
