We had a dramatic weather change this morning. There were as usual monarchs nectaring in the chinaberry tree next to our house (a yellow swallowtail too). At 10:20am a cold front and storm came through very rapidly and we had hail for about 7 minutes or so. The hail was marble size with some a bit larger than quarter size (it was pretty exciting and I collected some to keep in the freezer :) The monarchs tried to huddle in the trees, but I really couldn't locate them after the short rain and windstorm.
5:30pm, 65 degrees F, sunny, light breeze -- very unusual to not see any monarchs flying about. I checked the milkweed and saw lots of healthy caterpillars of all sizes. They do not appear to have had any problem with the hail.
