Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/03/2011

Number: 1

I hung out the feeder yesterday after seeing a post from Moretown VT. The first male showed up this evening at 6:05. He returned at 6:15, 6:40, & 7:00. He was not "Mikey" our resident male who's claimed this feeder for many years now. Mikey showed up on 5/9 in 2008, 5/8 in 2009, and 5/16 in 2010 ( and years before I began keeping records). He is very distinctive visually, very funny, and behaves the same and sits in the same spot each year guarding the feeder. He started his pendulum courtship flight within minutes of arrival last year after having a drink. Last year he was very itchy, scratching a lot of the time he was perching so I fear he had mites or some kind of parasite. I hope he survived but perhaps not. Maybe today's male is the "son of Mikey"
