Robin (First SEEN)

Date: 04/18/2011

Number: 1

Robins were heard about 2 weeks prior. Familiar call of mating rituals. Saw 2 males & 1 female and the males were challenging for mating rites. The female started building her nest while the male stood straight and tall and ran off all others. Female build nest, layed 3 eggs. Unfortunately, a red-winged hawk found too many finches in our backyard and attacked the robins. 2 eggs were kicked out in the process. The 3rd egg was left in the nest intact. The female came back, looked at her egg, looked at the other eggs outside the nest, looked up into the sky, fluffed up her feathers, looked again in the nest, turned a few twigs, then flew off never to return. Male still stood guard and ran off others. I took the eggs out and hope another Robin will come back and use the nest. Nest is out in the open, on the fence. Built very sturdy next to the garden full of big fat earth worms. Lots of water.

Photos were taken of all. (This is the 3rd return for the hawk. His first visit was to sit on the fence and swooped twice over the finch feeders October 2010.
