Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/12/2011

Number: 1

FIRST Monarch observed today flitting over the new dandelion blossoms. It didn't land, was very active. It was a large, brightly colored one.
I was surprised and concerned......we have no Milkweed poking thru yet; only tulips etc. blossoming so far this Spring. I have spotted a few native violets and buttercups blossoming but NO sign of milkweed above surface yet. not much for nectaring sources nor habitat for egg laying.
We've had very strong SE winds and heavy thunderstorms last several days. Temps. are now warmed up to 60 and 70's, very high humidity remaining throughout nite hours. The remainder of our migrating songbird species have appeared steadily also over last few days also.
