Loon (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/13/2011

Number: 1

Friday the 13th was an unlucky day for a large bird acting strangely in Oyster Pond, a body of water across the road from my house. Using binoculars I identified it as a Common Loon still in winter plummage. It was swimming sideways, jerking about and looked like it had a deformed or broken neck. Eventually I was able to see that it's beak had speared fishing net that was tight in it's mouth like a horses bridal. Another part of the net was wrapped around a wing causing it to be unable to straighten it's neck. I called the Department of Natural Resources and they were on the seen in half an hour, but the wind came up before they arrived and the Loon disappeared from sight. They searched Oyster Pond and adjoining waterways diligently but were unable to locate the bird. I haven't seen it since. Two days later 2 healthy Loons flew overhead calling.
