Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/13/2011

Number: 1

Several weeks ago, the monarchs came through and laid eggs. I saved five in a "critter keeper" so that my 4th graders could witness every stage of a butterfly's life. After the tiny cats were born, they fed them on tropical milkweed I had grown in my greenhouse. Right on schedule, they all formed their chrysalides, and last Thursday and Friday, they emerged. This was the first time this group of 4th graders had seen a butterfly emerge from its chrysalis. I wish you could have heard their "ahhhhhhs" as it crawled out of the chrysalis. It was inspiring! So, we sent 5 Monarch adult males on their way to Canada.

It doesn't matter how many times I witness this event, it is still so exciting!!!
