Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/15/2011

Number: 1

This year, due to ill health, impending surgery etc. I decided to forego putting up the feeders, which need to be sterilized and filled every day in the summer. However, looking out of the window when it was almost dusk, I spotted a thin ruby-throat darting about under the empty hanging brackets, clearly expecting to find the feeders. This is positive proof that they do return to exactly the same feeders each year. This tiny, fragile bird had flown all the way to South America and found its way back to the precise same location in South Carolina! How do they do it? It's quite miraculous and incredible! Do we know, does anyone know how they do it? I would love to know.
