Robin (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/23/2011

Number: 1

This morning I awoke and went out on our screened in porch and witnessed a ruckus. at first I thought the robins, who were nesting below our gutters, were fighting with each other. Then I noticed a cardinal and some other peach colored bird along with the robin dive bombing the robins nest who yesterday had three babies in it. I cannot see the nest from inside so I cracked open the door to witness a four foot black snake coiled inside the nest. I ran inside and got an extendable wand with a brush on the end and pushed the snake out I could see this relatively skinny snake with three bulges in it and realized the worst. My question should I remove this nest so that no other bird befalls the same fate or will the robins reuse it this year? If I leave the nest how do I keep snakes from doing this again, humanely?
