Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/27/2011

Number: 1

On May 27, 2011, I observed two female Monarchs in Harrisville, MI. The first female Monarch was sighted at 11:55 AM and the second female Monarch at 12:31 PM. The Monarchs were about 1/2 mile from each other on my hike while birdwatching. The temperature was 54F., DP 41 degrees on a sunny day. This morning it was 37F., for the low. The wind at noon was 21 mph out of the NNE and 12 mph from the E at 6PM. The wings of both were brighly colored. I can distinguish Monarchs from Viceroys. Both Monarchs were flying low to the ground (6' or less). The first Monarch landed on a freshly mowed lawn with dandalions in bloom. The second Monarch was fluttering about a Basswood (American Linden) tree that had emerging leaves. Milkweed in the area is 3" tall. No eggs were observed on 6 milkweed I inspected. I have been tagging Monarchs with Monarch Watch to quantify my sightings and have been looking for Monarchs since the first one was reported at Royal Oak, MI, on April 26th.
