Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/02/2011

Number: 1

June 2nd, 2011 sometime between noon and 12:30 pm while running along the Lakewalk between 30th and 40th Ave. East, Duluth,MN, I saw a gorgeous monarch butterfly flitting across a lawn with dandelions. Our weather has been so cold and windy (unrelenting NE winds off Lake Superior that I was delighted and surprised to see that a monarch had actually survived a very challenging trip to Duluth. The wind had switched to the SW the day before and brought slightly warmer temperatures and some sunshine. June 2nd the wind was again from the NE off Lake Superior, but some sunshine was peeking through the clouds. In my yard the milkweed is about 4 inchs high, and we are hoping to see monarchs soon. Spring has been very cold and wet here.
