Mowing grass for only the third time this season and out of the corner of my eye I spotted the familiar orange shape and size of a Monarch... but I wasn't convinced I'd seen a Monarch... it was moving very fast instead of the familiar flap-flap-glide flight pattern that I look for.
Later, when I moved to a different area for mowing, a field with lots of milkweed, I again spotted another orange butterfly. So I stopped the mower and watched... sure enough, flap-flap-glide!
My first Monarch of the year!
