Saw my first J today. And the report on the success of the caterpillars on our blackberry milkweeds continues to be phenomenal! I don't have an exact count, but there were dozens of caterpillars there, most of them 4th and 5th instars now. This was where I saw my first female laying eggs just as the milkweed emerged in late May. I have never seen such a high percentage of survival to this late stage, and I doubt if I'll see as many large caterpillars in one place ever again. There were several plants with multiple cats: two, three, and even four sharing the same milkweed. If all continues as well, we should have a terrific crop of Monarchs from Lady#1. Report in about two weeks from now.
