Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/17/2011

Number: 1

We saw our second sighting today of a Monarch. My son said it was a female. It was flying in our garden and landed on an orange artistic Lily that just opened. We also have milkweed and conflowers in our garden. We are a Waystation.

However, we are 20 miles from the Missouri River in the tristate area of NW IA, SD, NE zone-- the river is flooding and we are seeing many milkweed plants get flooded. Many milkweed are on the river edges, borders and sandbars. We will watch to see how the fall migration goes with the flooding in this area and Milkweed getting overtaken by the Missouri River flood.

We are going to try to get some milkweed and transplant more mature plants into our home yard and garden for fall migration in the next few days.
