Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/18/2011

Number: 1

On an amazingly warm sunny day at Presqu'ile Provincial Park, located on the north shore of Lake Ontario opposite Rochester, New York, I spent a couple of hours looking for monarchs. I captured 6 to examine, missed many others. Talk about chasing monarchs! All males, rapidly moving, perhaps patrolling a territory. No females captured nor seen. All captured monarchs in good condition with dulled coloration on the wings from some wearing.

The park is essentially a landform called a tombolo - long thick bar of sand that joins a limestone island to the mainland. Along the long north-south park road on the west side of the road is an endangered landform called a panne. Usually by this time of year, they have dried up, but the pannes are still filled with pools of water. Abundant qualities of lush milkweed, some with flower buds that will break open with blossoms soon.
