Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/21/2011

Number: 1

Monarchs in Northeastern Wisconsin are very scarce. I saw my first one around the usual time (last week of May), but I haven’t seen many since. Most of June has been below average temperatures, cloudy, and wet. I have not found any eggs or seen much evidence of caterpillar presence. The milkweed is great this year. Last year at this time, we had so many caterpillars that we were moving them to new milkweeds because they had eaten most of the plant they were on. This reminds me of a summer report I gave some years ago. Then when July rolled around we had a monarch explosion. Hopefully that will occur again this year. If it doesn’t, we won’t be contributing much to the fall migration from this part of the country.
