I have been on site in several northeastern Illinois natural areas these past several weekends - Glacial Park, McHenry County, Volo Bog, Lake County, Wright and Grainger Woods, Lake County, West Chicago Prairie, Cook County, doing rare plant monitoring - and have seen NO monarchs. I find this unusual for this time of year. I always see at least a few in each of these sites. Yet I collected three eggs from my waystation plants. Where are the butterflies?
