Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 07/02/2011

Number: 1

This is a followup on my caterpillar report of two weeks ago. Today I saw four newly emerged Monarchs during my one hour of viewing (from 1:00pm-2:00pm). Our weather has been very hot and humid the last few days, but today's air was much drier and the air temperature was about 80. I also saw one new butterfly emerged recently, but not today.......and I again saw an older female, still living and still trying to lay eggs.
I wish I could have watched from 10a.m. until late afternoon. The newly emerged Monarchs soon fly to a high tree branch. I noticed that one of the four today flew a bit before she wanted to when pestered by a near flying fritilary.
Did not see the dozens upon dozens that I was hoping for, but seeing four emerge in an hour was a good sign that there probably were many more.
Milkweed in that patch are about half in bloom now.
Not sure if the Monarchs will stay here or move on, but I will continue to watch the patch for further number updates.
